Log time on tasks

Using the task timer to record how long you spent on a task

Written by Christy Umberger

When you open a task, a timer starts automatically in the bottom bar and tracks how long the task has been open. Use it to log accurate time against your work.

Understand the task timer

The timer runs in the bottom bar of the task and counts up from the moment you open it.

  • Click the pause icon to pause the timer, and click again to resume.

  • The timer doesn't log time on your behalf; it only tracks how long the task is open.

  • If you leave the task or exit Limble, the timer resets to zero.

  • By default, you're automatically prompted to log time before you leave a task if the task has been open for more than 5 minutes.

We recommend logging your time manually rather than relying on the timer alone, because if you leave a task open without working on it, the timer keeps counting.

Log time by completing a task

  1. Click Complete task in the bottom bar.

  2. In the Complete task window, confirm or adjust your time in the Hours and Minutes fields.

The Complete task window shows your previously logged time, the time you're adding, and the new total, so you can confirm it before saving.

  3. Complete any additional fields, such as Completion notes or whether the task caused unplanned downtime.

  4. Click Complete task.

Log time without completing a task

  1. Click Log time in the bottom bar.

  2. Enter or adjust your time in the Hours and Minutes fields. If needed, adjust the Logged on date and time.

  3. Optionally, under Work summary, describe the work you did.

  4. Click Log time.

The task stays open, and your time and work summary are added to it.

Manage logged-time settings

You can customize how your users log their time in the configuration center.

Prevent users from editing their time

By default, users can adjust the time that the timer tracks. This is recommended, since it keeps your time records more accurate.

If needed, you can turn this off for a role:

  1. Go to Configuration center > Users and access control > Roles.

  2. Select the role you want to edit.

  3. Search for permission #183 Override automatic task timer.

  4. Click the checkbox to remove the permission.

Important to know: this can only be turned off by role, not for individual users.

Once it's off, a user's logged time comes only from the timer and can't be edited. Only a user with permission to edit time, such as a manager or super user, can adjust it afterward.

Change the reminder threshold

By default, you're automatically prompted to log time when you leave a task if the task has been open for more than 5 minutes. But this threshold can be changed.

  1. Go to Configuration center > Work and task management > General task settings.

  2. Under Logging time, find Log time reminder.

  3. Select a new duration from the dropdown.

Require a description when logging time

By default, users can log time without describing what they did. If you want a description every time, you can change the setting.

  1. Go to Configuration center > Work and task management > General task settings.

  2. Under Logging time, find Log time description requirement.

  3. Select Required.

Disable the task timer

Disabling the task timer is a global, account-wide setting; it applies to all users at all sites.

  1. Go to Configuration center > Work and task management > General task settings.

  2. Under Logging time, turn off Enable the task timer.

Disabling the timer removes it from all tasks account-wide. Users will still be prompted to log time, but without a running timer to reference.
